About Us

Founded by Elaine Negroponte in 2005, CAMBODIA~p.r.i.d.e. is an outgrowth of the 2B1 foundation, which was established by Nicholas Negroponte and his son Dimitri.  Like 2B1 and Negroponte’s current $100 laptop project One Laptop per Child, CAMBODIA~p.r.i.d.e. seeks to promote learning through creative exploration. This is a pioneering educational approach using computers developed by world-renowned MIT Media Lab Professors Seymour Papert and Mitchel Resnick.

An Innovative School in a School

The digital learning program in Reaksmy now serves as an innovative “school in a school”, complementing the rudimentary government school system. The school’s innovative approach includes MIT-developed learning programs, such as LEGO/Logo and, most recently, Scratch, an inventive program that allows children to build their own multimedia creations on the computer as easily as they would build physical structures using LEGO   building blocks. The goal is to use these new tools to get the children thinking for themselves, something that never happens in their regular school programs.

No-Frills

CAMBODIA~p.r.i.d.e. is focused on ensuring that each dollar donated will be used to make a huge difference to the lives of rural children. Recently a $10 gift enabled the foundation to purchase 83 notebooks and pens for the poorest children at the school. Another gift of $1000 replaced the village soccer field, which had been taken over by a Chinese company. Just $2500 will fund a skilled, motivated and hard-working teacher for one academic year. Caring and motivated teachers are essential to facilitate the best learning environment for the children in our programs.

Currently, our main focus of funding is the Reaksmy Primary School in a rural community in Preah Vihear Province. This school serves four villages, and private donations have enabled us to significantly expand our program since 2004, providing separate Computer and English classrooms to enable 200 children to attend our program each day. The program has now become an important part of school life and is also having a positive impact on the community’s attitude to education, thinking and problem solving.
